NETA – New European Theatre Action

The International Theatre Network NETA (New European Theatre Action) was established upon the initiative of the former Macedonian Minister of Culture, Mr Blagoja Stefanovski, and representatives of the most significant international theatres and festivals across fifteen European countries. NETA, Europe's second largest theatre network, aims to advance theatre art, exchange experience and performances, as well as promote the distinctive national traits of theatre production. Its activities include the exchange of performances, artists, technical staff, experts and organisers in the field of theatre and festival production, as well as coproductions, publishing, international communication etc.

NETA is presided over by Mr Blagoja Stefanovski, its Secretary General is Mr Damir Domitrović Kos, and the Honorary President is the Minister of Culture, Media and Sport of Montenegro, Mr Branislav Mićunović. The Executive Committee, Theatre Board and Festival Board are the bodies by way of which NETA will develop and realise established activities and objectives.

NETA's registered office has beenat Ex Ponto Festival (B-51 Cultural society) in Ljubljana, Slovenia, since November 2007.

Every second year, NETA organises a festival which is held in various member states; the first was organised in Podgorica (Montenegrin National Theatre), the next one in Sankt Petersburg in April 2007, and the third in Trieste, Nova Gorica and Koper in September 2009.

NETA Festival and General Assembly Next Year in Ljubljana

One of the resolutions adopted by NETA – international network of theatres and festivals – General Assembly meeting organised by Montenegrin National Theatre and held on 18th December 2010 in Podgorica, was that NETA Festival and General Assembly 2011 will take place in Ljubljana within the 18th International EX PONTO Performing Arts Festival.

NETA General Assembly meeting in Podgorica was attended by 15 directors of European theatres and festivals, including three from Slovenia: Jožko Čuk from Slovene National Theatre Nova Gorica, Primorska Summer Festival and Permanent Slovene Theatre Trieste were represented by Primož Bebler, whilst Damir Domitrović Kos, director of EX PONTO Festival Ljubljana and Secretary General of NETA, presided over the meeting. At the same time, the Montenegrin National Theatre premiered The Mountain Wreath based on the eponymous work by P.P. Njegoš and directed by Diego de Brea.

NETA – New European Theatre Action – currently joins about 30 festivals and theatres from 13 countries, in particular from Eastern Europe, Turkey and Russia. Next year, the network's activity will be focused on the organisation of 5th International NETA Festival in Ljubljana, Slovenia, the publication of NETA magazine (published both in member states mother tongue and English), second international coproduction by NETA directed by controversial Croatian director Oliver Frljić, first NETA Small Scene Festival taking place in Vratza (Bulgaria), as well as a number of NETA productions’ guest performances and mutual collaborations and tours of network members.

One of network's long-term objectives is the establishment of NETA international theatre ensemble and NETA international television.

Recently, NETA International Institute with registered office in Ljubljana, Prešernova 7, at the headquarters of B-51 Cultural Society (EX PONTO Festival) was founded. EX PONTO Festival is one of co-founders of NETA project initiated in 2005.
